The Man at the Window

Cal Becker used to uncover the truth for a living. Now he hides from it.

At fifty-two, disgraced and untethered, Cal has retreated to his dead mother’s house on Maple Street—a man with a tape recorder, a notebook, and nowhere left to fall. He doesn’t go out. He doesn’t connect. He watches. The neighbors across the street, the Whitakers, are too perfect: same jog, same wave, same three-second smile. And the mailman has never once stopped at their box.

Cal tells himself he’s just observing. It’s a habit. A coping mechanism. What else does a man do when his last story drove an innocent man to a bathtub in Tacoma?

But when the tape catches a sound he didn’t make—a click, deliberate and mechanical—Cal’s surveillance takes a darker turn. Someone is in his house. Someone has touched his equipment. And Elyse Whitaker is smiling at him like she’s been waiting for him to catch up.

The Man at the Window is a psychological thriller about the thin line between observation and obsession, between investigation and delusion. It is a story about what happens when the watcher is also the subject—and when the truth arrives in layers no one is meant to survive decoding.
